WhatsApp Business API pricing in India, explained honestly

WhatsApp API pricing confuses people because there are always two bills and most vendors only show you one. This guide separates what Meta charges from what your provider charges, and gives you the questions that reveal which is which.

There are always two costs

When a vendor quotes you "₹X per message, all-inclusive", they have merged these two. That is not automatically bad — but it means you cannot see their margin, and you cannot tell whether a Meta rate change was passed on to you or absorbed as extra profit.

How Meta charges

Two practical consequences. First, replying to customers who message you first costs nothing, so responsive support is cheap and proactive marketing is not. Second, category matters enormously to your bill — sending a promotion under a utility template to save money is a policy violation, not an optimisation.

Meta publishes its India rate card and revises it periodically. Always check Meta's current published rates rather than trusting a number in a blog post, including this one — which is exactly why we do not quote figures here.

How BrookTel charges

BrookTel does not touch your Meta bill. Meta charges message delivery directly to your own Meta Business account at Meta's rates, and you see it in your own Meta dashboard.

What you pay BrookTel is a flat monthly platform subscription — currently ₹0 to ₹999 a month for standard plans, with a Custom tier for high volume. That covers the inbox, templates, campaigns, automation, API and analytics.

  • Zero per-message markup on WhatsApp
  • Your Meta billing is visible to you, in a dashboard we do not control
  • Your WhatsApp Business Account and number stay under your ownership
  • Platform cost is predictable and does not scale with message volume

How to spot a marked-up quote

A provider taking a transparent, disclosed margin on messages is a legitimate business model. A provider who cannot answer question one is not being straight with you.

  1. Ask directly: is Meta billing me, or are you billing me for message delivery?
  2. Ask what their per-message price is for each category, then compare it against Meta's published India rate card.
  3. Ask whether you will have access to your own Meta Business Manager billing view.
  4. Ask what happens to your price when Meta changes its rates — does it move with them, both ways?
  5. Ask whether the WhatsApp Business Account is registered under your business or theirs.

Ways to genuinely reduce your WhatsApp cost

  • Get users to message you first — service conversations you reply to are free
  • Use utility templates for genuinely transactional messaging instead of wrapping everything as marketing
  • Clean your contact list; messaging dead numbers costs money and hurts your quality rating
  • Consolidate several updates into one well-designed message rather than a sequence of separate sends
  • Use interactive buttons to resolve queries in-thread instead of triggering new outbound conversations
  • Send SMS where SMS is genuinely sufficient — some alerts do not need to be on WhatsApp

Frequently asked questions

How much does WhatsApp Business API cost in India?

Two separate amounts. Meta charges per template message, priced by category — marketing costs more than utility or authentication, and your replies inside a user-initiated conversation are free. Your provider charges for the platform. With BrookTel, the platform is ₹0 to ₹999 a month for standard plans and Meta bills delivery directly to you at Meta's rates.

Are incoming WhatsApp messages charged?

Messages customers send you are not charged, and your replies within the customer service window that their message opens are free too. This is why encouraging inbound conversations is the cheapest way to use WhatsApp.

Does BrookTel add a markup on WhatsApp messages?

No. Meta bills delivery directly to your own Meta Business account. BrookTel's revenue is the platform subscription, which is why the two are on separate invoices from separate companies.

Why do providers quote very different per-message prices?

Because most are bundling Meta's rate with their own margin into a single number, and the margin differs. Compare the underlying Meta rate against the quote to see what is being added.

Is there a free tier for WhatsApp messaging?

Service conversations — your replies to customers who messaged you first — are not charged. Proactive template messages are charged. Meta has adjusted its free allowances over time, so check Meta's current published terms.
